Reviews for Magnetic Barrel Protector
Before I ordered this item, I checked to see that a magnet would stick to my Beretta extended choke tube. No problem with several small magnets that I have in the shop. No luck getting this to stick though.
Since I am out the price of the "protector" plus about that much more for shipping I decided to cut it open to see what is actually in there. That magnet is about 25mmx30mmx2mm. Even sticking it to the metal frame of my computer desk feels weak. I decided to invest another $10 in this disaster and found a 30x30x5mm N52 Neodymium magnet on eBay. That is the most powerful magnet you can buy in that style. It has the disadvantage of being brittle but that should not be a problem in this application.
I paid $10 for two of these magnets. Without the inflated eBay pricing and shipping cost this magnet could probably been included in the barrel protector from the factory for another $1 to $1. 50 and had a much better product.
Update: When the magnets arrived I replaced the factory magnet with one of the new ones. I had to remove all of the cardboard filler between the outside layers and it was a perfect fit. I used some Elmer's ProBond to secure the magnet and glue the flap closed. Now, instead of falling back to the ground as I lift the gun the barrel protector will actually jump up from the ground to the barrel when they come within 1/8" or so of each other.
